5 Signs your Baby is Ready to Start Solids
Weaning is an exciting milestone, but many mums feel unsure about when to start. The truth is, there’s no 'one-size-fits-all' moment or age — but there are clear signs your baby will show when they're ready. Let’s break down the key signs of readiness to look out for, helping you feel confident in starting your little one’s weaning journey.
1. Sitting Up with Little Support 🪑
Before starting solids, your baby should be able to sit upright for short periods of time (supported is okay!) and hold their head steady. This helps prevent choking and ensures they can swallow safely.
💡 Tip: If your baby still slumps or flops forward in their highchair, it might be too early to introduce solid foods.
2. Good Hand-to-Mouth Coordination ✋
Watch if your baby can pick up objects (like a toy or spoon) and bring them to their mouth. This shows they're developing the motor skills needed to grab soft foods or self-feed during baby-led weaning.
👶 Try this: Offer a soft spoon and see if your baby tries to guide it toward their mouth — a good sign they’re getting ready!
3. Loss of the Tongue-Thrust Reflex 👅
Newborns naturally push things out of their mouths with their tongue — this reflex fades around 4–6 months. If your baby can keep food in their mouth rather than instantly pushing it out, it’s a positive sign they're prepared for solids.
🍼 Quick test: Gently touch their lips with a small spoon. If they push it out, their reflex may still be strong — give it more time.
4. Showing Interest in Your Food 🍽️
Is your baby suddenly fascinated by what’s on your plate? If they’re watching you eat, reaching for your food, or mimicking chewing, they may be curious about tasting solid foods themselves. It’s important that this sign is displayed in combination with all others as babies often reach for everything to put in their mouths by this stage, as you will know!
🍽️ Pro tip: Let your baby sit at the table with you during meals. You can even often them a spoon to play with — it helps build interest and familiarity with food.
What If Your Baby Doesn’t Show These Signs Yet? 🤔
Don’t worry! Every baby is unique, and it's okay if yours takes a little longer. Weaning is best started around 6 months, but readiness varies. Keep watching for these signs, and trust your baby’s pace.
